Criticisms to using a midwife in giving birth

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

When people think of having a baby delivered they think of doctors and hospitals. But there is definitely a growing movement among women who are actually wanting to go more natural. There are some women who are actually foregoing the medication during delivery in order to have a more natural mode or nature child birth. Part of that movement of going natural is using a midwife to deliver a baby.  There are many advantages to this that we are going to look at in this article.

First of all some people think using a midwife isn’t safe.Since the doctors have all the medical equipment necessary, they normally think that having a baby with a doctor is the safest thing.  But this isn’t true since most midwife deliveries are only done with safe pregnancies.  In other words if there is any history of complications it will not be performed with a midwife.  Other then that as a San Diego midwife I know first hand midwives know what to do in medical emergencies.

Another criticism is that, normally, midwives will not be using any medication that women definitely need.  That is false because women don’t need to have drugs for delivery.  As a matter of fact drugs are the main reason most pregnancies take so long. The drugs can normally cause the birth to stop since it is sometimes disrupting the natural delivery. I have seen first hand as a midwives San Diego how much faster natural deliveries are.  So there is no need for medication and it only hinders the delivery.

Midwives are not doctors: that is another criticism. It does not actually mean that they don’t know what to do medically, while that is true. All midwives have to go through a licensing and certification process. This whole process teaches them everything including what medical procedures may need to be performed in certain situations.  As a San Diego licensed midwife practitioner I know first hand that midwives are prepared for emergencies.

As you can see, having a baby with a midwife definitely has more benefits than with those people would have you to believe.  It is safer and helps you have a faster delivery then with medications.

Is it really dangerous to use a midwife

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

One of the most notoriously misunderstood professions in the world is midwifery. Sure they aren’t as common as they used to be but there are still some around. If you are not knowledgeable about this profession they are the ones who assist expectant mothers. These midwives are not usually medical persons that is why there a lot of questions about the safety of the practice.Because giving birth using midwives is usually done at the homes of the mothers.  So we are going to look and see if it is really safe to use a midwife in a home birth.

Drug-free delivery of babies are what midwives usually do.  At least that is my experience running a San Diego midwife service.  Plus it is usually done in a home. Those are the reasons why there are so many sceptics out there who say it is not safe. They think that the only safe way of delivering a baby is with the aid of drugs.  But that is not true.

In fact what most people don’t realize is that the drugs they take actually slow down the pregnancy and can cause complications. When a midwife does a home birth naturally at home without using drugs it actually speeds up delivery and also recovery from the delivery.  That has been the case so many times in my midwives San Diego service.A lot of mothers experience speedy recovery when they went natural.

But natural homebirths are usually only recommended for women who are healthy enough to undergo it.This means that if the woman has a high risk pregnancy or has a history of medical problems which can complicate the pregnancy then I will not accept them.  Generally the women I do assist in my San Diego licensed midwife practice are women who have had no history of complications.Once I learn that the mother has medical problems then I would tell them to deliver the baby in the hospital instead.

Hopefully people would realize that there are many precautions before a mother can be allowed to undergo home birthing assissted by midwives.  So when a homebirth is done it turns out wonderful for the family.

Is using a homebirth safe

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

Hiring a midife is one way of delivering a baby. They are also licensed pros even though they are no as medically qualified as nurses or doctors.  They generally assist women to have natural childbirths. And they usually also do it at the houses of the expectant mothers.Since the deliveries are mostly done at homes and there are no doctors or nurses to assist the delivery a lot of people doubt the safety of this method.  This article will look and see if it is safe to use a midwife.

First of all as a San Diego midwife this allows me to answer these questions with knowledge. The main concern of people about this method is its safety.  Well midwives are trained medically for problems in delivery. And most, if not all, things that might arise during a pregnancy can be handled by a midwife.

Next they worry about the fact the delivery is done at home. What they are concerned about is that they think there aren’t enough medical equipments on hand should anyhting happen and there aren’t any doctors that will attend to the patient.  But in general in my midwives San Diego service I only take women who are healthy. What I meant was that if the pregnancy is high risk then I would tell them to deliver the baby in the hospital.Or if their previous deliveries had some issues then I would also suggest them to just go to the hospital.

A midwife does have the training and possess necesssary medical equipments for emergencies. But usually because of the natural birth process you would be surprised to know there aren’t many complications. That is the general experience of my San Diego licensed midwife service. Most complications are caused by the drugs administered during the delivery.  By going natural it avoids some of the usual complications.

So hopefully you would see that this method of delivery is a safe way to go deliver a baby.  So if you are considering a natural birth you should research more. You will be surprised at how beneficial it can be to the baby and the mother. And you will see it is safer than most people think.

Benefits of having a mdifwife during modern times

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

One way of delivering a baby is by hiring a midwife.  Although not as common as having a baby in a hospital it is gaining popularity. The reason being for its not being a popular method of delivering a baby is because people think it is not a safe way to deliver babies.  What I mean by that is not a lot of technology is used to do the procedure. And with not a lot of technology people associate it with being not advanced or safe. That is why in this article we would be looking at the technological advances that midwifery made to cope up with modern times.

Well as a midwife in San Diego I know first hand that midwives are starting to use more technology.  Although the goal of having a baby through a midwife is to have it naturally. It would still be possible to use some technology in this method.  For example midwives are equipped with ultrasound technology. So that the midwives can also find out what the gender of the baby is.

Another advancement that is being done in my midwives San Diego service is that we do have emergency equipment at birth.  Things like equipment to resuscitate.  Other various forms of emergency equipment. These things for emergency purposes negate the argument of other people that midwifery is not safe.

Another advance being done with my San Diego waterbirth service is the waterbirth kits being used.Waterbirth is a method of giving birth to a baby by putting the mother in a tub of water. The kits help in making the delivery easier.  They also are in place to help the mother as well as the baby stay safe.

As you can see the practice of midwifery is more advanced then people think. The method is just more natural as compared to hospital delivery but the practice has advanced also. This means that midwifery is a more safer practice now to deliver babies.  All of these advanced tools make having a baby at home as safe as having a baby in the hospital. So if you plan on undergoing a homebirth do not think that it is not safe.

What is the role of midwives during pregnancies

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Using a midwife is one of the options in delivering a baby. Usually this method is done at home. And also, this method is usually done naturally.Natural means that there are no drugs administered to a mother during her delivery. There are lots of mothers who choose this method because there are lots of benefits that they can get from it.Some benefits they can get are that no drugs are administered during the delivery and that the delivery is done in their homes. So now let us take a look at some of the roles that a midwife does during a delivery.

So let us define what a midwife is.A midwife is someone who assists pregnant women during their delivery of their babies.  Usually not a doctor.  But as a San Diego licensed midwife there is many other things that I know a midwife does.Of course, they are not as medically qualified as doctors but there are lots of things that they can do that can help pregnant mothers.

Of course, most of their duty is to advice and assist during the delivery. But they also give advices and assist during the whole 9 months of pregnancy. Plus they also advice and help post delivery.  So most women who are homebirth midwife San Diego have a huge job when it comes to pregnancy and delivery. Many women turn to them for advice and help.Although they are not as medically qualified like nurses or doctors, most pregnant women still trust their advice.

Of course the biggest job of the midwife is during delivery. This is more true when the delivery is done in the home of the pregnant mother.Although midiwives are still allowed to help inside the hospitals. But when it comes to home birthing their responsibility grows larger. As I mentioned earlier as a San Diego midwife although not usually a doctor or nurse they do have training medically. This training will make them be ready for any emergency that might arise during the delivery.

So those are some of the roles of a midwife. As you can see they have a very big responsibility. But most midwives have done their jobs well.  They have successfully helped women for many years. And they will continue to do so as midwifery becomes more popular to mothers in the years to come.

Benefits of waterbirthing

Friday, September 18th, 2009

One of the options most women aren’t familiar with is having a waterbirth. This delivery is the kind of delivery where a mother is placed in a tub full of water.  From there she delivers the baby. There are many benefits to this method. And even if it is not that popular more and more women are now undergoing this method. We are going to discuss the benefits of these method in this article.

First of all having a baby in water is very beneficial to the woman and the baby. As a San Diego licensed midwife I have seen it firsthand.  The benefits to the woman is that the water soothes some of the labor pains. It loosens the muscles resulting to an easier delivery. This will lead to having babies in a faster time and less hardship for the mother during the delivery.

Another benefit that people will get fro this method is that there is no drugs used because it already soothes the muscles of the mother and it also eases the pain of delivery. Most of the time, waterbirthing gives the mother the chance to deliver the baby naturally. I have seen it a lot of times while having a San Diego waterbirth.Women who usually need drugs to be administered to them during delivery do not necessarily have to use drugs in this method of birthing. The relaxation of the muscles and the quick delivery that it results to allows them to withstand the pain. This will be good for motheres who do not want drugs used during the delivery of their babies. This is because they have the fear that drugs used during the delivery will be harmful to the baby’s health.

And these are the benefits for the babies. For nine months the baby is in water.  By having the baby deliver into water reduces the shock they have. The baby will experience less shock since it will also be going straight into water.Undergoing delivery is stressful enough for the baby.  By reducing it a little bit it helps.  And these waterbirths can be performed by most San Diego midwives. They have the know how in this type of delivery.  And as you see it has a lot of benefits to the mom and new baby.

Pregnant mothers and how mdiwives can assist them

Monday, September 14th, 2009

If a woman gets pregnant there would be a lot of important decisins that should be decided upon immediately. She needs to go choose a doctor that suits her needs and wants. They need to choose a hospital whre they would deliver their babies. And other important things as well. Most women don’t realize that they also have the choice of opting for a natural delivery. That is the method where drugs are not administered during delivery. This method is gaining a lot of following as more and more people become more concerned with their health.A profession that really helps in this area is called midwifery.

What is the profession midwifery?  It is the practice of assisting women to give birth naturally. There are other defintions. But this defintion is the simplest one.  As a San Diego licensed midwife that is the job which is to help a woman attempt to deliver naturally. This can give a lot of benefits. The main benefit, of course, is the use of no drugs at all during the delivery. And the delivery proceeds faster because there are no drugs administered.Because drugs administered to the mother can actually slow down the delivery itself.

These days, women are not only choosing to deliver their babies the natural way but they also choose to deliver their babies at their own homes. They are choosing their homes over hospitals to give birth to their babies. This different from what people are usually doing. But a lot of benefits await the mothers and the babies.  As a midwives San Diego I have been able to see these benefits firsthand. One benefit that can be gained is the privacy of the place that will be used as the delivery room. There is also no need for surgical procedures because the way of giving birth is natural.

Now of course there are some objections. Some are doubtful about the safety of ths method. But if the pregnancy is a low-risk one then this method is very safe.  Now of course it isn’t recommended if the pregnancy is considered high risk.  In my San Diego midwife practice I always advise my clients to go with the normal delivery in a hospital if it is high risk.So that if anything happens it can be immediately attended to by a doctor.

Midwifery and the wrong things people think about it

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Midwifery is a profession concerned about the well-being of a pregnant mother.  They provide prenatal care as well attend the birth. And they also provide postpartum care.Midwives are not nurses but if they choose to, they can be. But they have rules and regulations and they also have a governing body. But what are the misconceptions about them?

In general, the misunderstandings happen for those that do homebirths.  In my practice of helping women as a midwife in San Diego, homebirths are where people get confused.  People usually think delivering a baby at home is unsafe. But for low-risk pregnancy undergoing home birthing is very safe.Midwives also carry necessary medical equipments in case something unavoidable happens.  And in general because of the method of deliveries most complications are avoided.

This is the part where the benefits come in.  As some homebirth midwife San Diego perform their services they do it with a natural delivery. This is the kind of delivery where medicine is not needed or rather, no medicine is administered to help in labor. No medicine is used to ease the pain of birthing.  But by not using medication this actually helps the delivery happen faster.Because most mothers do not know the fact that taking medicines that help ease birthing pains actually slows down the delivery.  So by avoiding medication they don’t slow down the delivery.

Another good thing would be when women deliver using water birth method because this has a lot of benefits for the baby and the mother. From doing water birth in San Diego in my practice the water eases the delivery.  The water actually soothes the muscles and allows easer delivery. And another good thing about water birth is that the shock and stress that the baby endures during birthing is reduced.

As you can see there are misunderstanding with midwives. But here’s hoping that people would recognize the safety of this method as long as the pregnancy is low-risk.And midwives also have rules and regulations given by a governing body. That is why midwives are required to undero extensive schooling on midwifery. They have some know-how in medical procedures that is needed in birthing. So mothers should not worry about their safety while giving birth since midwives have all the necessary medical equipments for emergency purposes. This can be a viable choice for women with low-riskpregnancies.

Wrong information about midwives

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Midwifery is a profession that takes care of expectant mothers. They provide prenatal care and, obviously, they are there when the expectant mothers are giving birth. Postpartum care is also provided by them as well.Midwives are not nurses but if they choose to, they can be. But they are regulated and governed. But what are the misconceptions about them?

The misconception comes from the practice of giving birth at home.  In my practice of helping women as a midwife in San Diego, homebirths are where people get confused.People have this wrong belief that having a baby at home is not safe. But for low risk pregnancy they are safe. Also, midwives have some necessary medical equipments at hand in case something serious happens. Most complications are avoided because of the method that they deliver babies.

This is the part where the benefits come in.  As some homebirth midwife San Diego perform their services they do it with a natural delivery. This is the kind of delivery where medicine is not needed or rather, no medicine is administered to help in labor. No medicine is being used to limit the pain experienced by the mother during birthing. But not using medication to help ease the pain of birthing is a good thing since it makes the delivery happen faster.Because most mothers do not know the fact that taking medicines that help ease birthing pains actually slows down the delivery. So by not administering medicine to the mother the delivery would be faster.

And when the mother decides to undergo water birthing more positive things can be benfited by both the mother and the baby. From doing water birth in San Diego in my practice the water eases the delivery.  The water actually soothes the muscles and allows easer delivery. And another good thing about water birth is that the shock and stress that the baby endures during birthing is reduced.

As you can see there are misconceptions about midwives and their profession.  But hopefully you can see that for low risk pregnancies it is safe. Also, they have a regulating body.  So midwives do have to go to extensive schooling. They have some know-how in medical procedures that is needed in birthing. That is why mothers should not be worried about their safety since all necessary medical equipments are with the midwife. It can be a good choice for pregnant mothers who have low-risk pregnancies.

Is homebirth safe

Friday, August 21st, 2009

How they deliver their babies is one of the choices that women can make during their pregnancy. When I say how they will deliver I am referring to a hospital delivery or a homebirth. Most women don’t know that they have a choice on how to deliver their babies because they think that giving birth at their own homes is dangerous. But there are of course critics who are wary of this method. But by researching they can learn that this method is safe, if not, as safe as a hospital delivery.

The safety of a homebirth is definitely questioned.  From my observations from my practice as a midwife in San Diego I have found it to be absolutely safe. From the 300 homebirths I have assisted in the dangers are just the same as if you were to deliver in a hospital.  Having it in a hospital or at home doesn’t minimize those risks. On the ohter hand, the risks also would not increase because of this.

So what would be the main threat of undergoing a procedure like this?  Well for one people worry if some complications occur.  They say the people who administer the homebirth usually aren’t nurses.  Well as a midwives San Diego we do know medical procedures.  We carry the necessary medical equipment for all the common complications. It is but natural that any serious complications that would arise during birthing should be addressed by a doctor.  But that isn’t any different then in a hospital.

Now of course homebirths are only suggested for women who have low risk pregnancies.  If a woman is found to have possible complications any good midwife would not encourage this method.  This is standard procedure for all licensed midwife in San Diego. The reason as to why is because midwives have a limited medical practice and they cannot do all the things that a doctor can do.  That is why they do make sure any high risk pregnancies are delivered in a hospital.

It will be very hard to convince those people who are not keen on undergoing this method.  But for those women who see this as an alternative they should understand it is safe.
