How To Prepare Your Kids For School

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

It can be very hard to prepare our children for the school year. There are so many things that need to be planned out just right, as well as many items that need to be purchased from the store. Though this can get quite stressful, there are some things we can buy that they’ll always use while in school.

Look for the necessities when you are shopping, like notebooks, loose paper, pencils, pens, and binders. Young children may also need markers, paints, and colored pencils. They might also require a smock to wear during art making.

Do not send your child to school without a really good backpack. The backpack you buy must easily hold all of their school supplies and their books without breaking. In addition, the straps need to be padded and thick in order to prevent them from developing back and shoulder pain.

Most kids will need new clothing for school because they have outgrown the old ones. Get them clothes that you both like and ensure that they are appropriate for all the activities they might engage in at school.

Be sure to send your child to school with a strong pair of shoes that do not have holes or tears in them. Invest in shoes that look good for everyday wear, but also work well for sports. Sneakers or really comfy boots will usually do.

For kids who take music classes, don’t forget to send them to school with an instrument. If your child is taking guitar lessons, you might want to purchase an Ibanez acoustic electric guitar. This guitar is versatile because it can be played acoustically and electrically. Also, it will suit their small hands, since Ibanez guitars generally have smaller bodies, as well as your budget.

A digital sport watch is a great accessory for any child. It will help them be on time for every activity they need to do and will also help them make their curfew.

To keep your kids stylish, you might want to purchase a T-shirt with a custom lcd on it. This lcd can display whatever you want it to, including words, scrolling messages, pictures, and moving images. They can even react to music and do not cost much more than a regular T-shirt.

Getting all the shopping done in time for school can be hard and you’ll probably end up taking several trips to the store, but don’t let it stress you out. You usually need the same things each year, so try to stay calm and always make a list.

Creating Paradise Within: Better Health through Ayurvedic Rejuvenation

Kerala Ayurveda Academy Video related

Since humans first roamed the earth there have been oral and written stories of the quest to find the elixir of life–the Fountain of Youth. The Western biblical tradition tells of a Golden Age when people lived hundreds of years. In the East, there are stories of those who attained immortality, existing in magical realms. Are such stories, or the desire to be able to attain such a state of being, folly–mere vanity in the face of the truth of impermanence and death?

Surely, there are those whose lives have been rich and fulfilling in one way or another and who wish life didn’t have to end so soon. Conversely, there are those who hold the opposite view:  life has been full of sorrow and to die is a blessed final relief.  For some the party ends too soon; for others the torment continues.

Can you remember the days when you were full of vibrant energy from sunrise to sunset? A holistic program of rejuvenation will bring back the body’s natural energetic state making us feel young and energetic again.

According to most Ancient Healing Traditions, food only nourishes our gross physical layer.  The subtle nature–our true essence or spirit, and therefore the most important part of our being, is left malnourished.  Ayurveda teaches that if life is lived in accordance with prakruti(your innate nature) or basic body-mind constitution, then a natural youthfulness is maintained throughout life

According to Ayurveda and the wisdom traditions of the East, one’s state of mind is what makes the difference. Ultimately, to feel youthful, rich and full of life is a state of mind. There are those who go from complacency to boredom in living out their lives and those who are ever-thirsty, ever-searching; young people in rockers in front of wide screen television sets and grannies in sneakers, exploring the pyramids. Highly effective methods of physical  rejuvenation are found within Ayurveda, but there also is a mental or spiritual dimension that is viewed as an essential ingredient. If mental and spiritual flexibility and openness are not developed and enhanced, of what value is a more youthful body, except for the temporary relief or pleasure it provides?

Negative emotions are considered to toxic to our well being leading to physical illness. Decreasing our exposure to sensory overloads is a critical step in emotional detoxification.  Unending mental dialogues are toxic to our mind. Some call it the drunken monkey mind syndrome.  Spiritual Rejuvenation: The most joyful state is just to be, atoned, attentive, empowered and aware of our Inner Divinity.

Detoxification and Rejuvenation are serious components of Ayurvedic medicine. The methods offered can be quite extreme with respect to the demands it places on one’s time and lifestyle, yet the rewards often outweigh the inconvenience. At the same time, as intimated, there are practices one can engage in that can give slow but increased benefits if practiced regularly and over time.

Exercises(Yoga & Meditation) from the Ayurvedic tradition that slow the aging process and, when coupled with quality diet and other first level health-giving recommendations, actually can reverse the aging process. With the use of basic or more advanced levels of detoxification and rejuvenation, they can have amazing results. If practiced in the morning, they get the body and mind up and ready to face the day. If they are performed in the evening, they help to relax one and smooth out the stresses and strains of the day.

Can you remember the days when you were full of vibrant energy from sunrise to sunset? Rejuvenation is essential to your vitality, creativity, happiness and inner growth.  A holistic program of rejuvenation will bring back the body’s natural energetic state making us feel young and energetic again.

Degrees for Women: Why Online Education is Perfect for You

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Interest in online education is growing fast. In fact, according to a survey report by the Sloan Consortium, a group of institutions and organizations who follow online education trends, over twenty percent of all students who were enrolled in higher education in 2007 were taking at least one course online. The report also stated that the current economic recession is driving more people to turn to online education as they look for ways to increase their employability. So why is online education so appealing? Here are ten reasons why online education is on the rise.

  1. Convenience: The one thing that people love about online education is that it is perfect for busy people. Online learning is provided in a format that allows you to work it around your schedule. If you have a full-time job and/or children, this type of flexibility is crucial.

  2. Smaller Classes: Many traditional colleges have classes where the number of students can be over a hundred. With this many students, it is very difficult to receive any individual attention. Online classes, on the other hand, tend to have between 15 to 25 students.

  3. Books Included: Unlike at traditional schools where book costs can be an expensive surprise every semester, online colleges often include the fees for books in their tuition. This way you know how much they are going to cost.

  4. Learn at Your Own Pace: Online education creates an atmosphere where you can learn at your own pace. They often have accelerated programs if you would like to learn faster or, if your learning style is at a slower rate, then they cater to those needs as well.

  5. Open Notes and Books: One of the great things about online education is the exams tend to be open note and open book. This increases your chances of succeeding.

  6. Anonymity: Many people do not like to have the entire class’s eyes on them when they answer a question or contribute to a discussion. It is because of this that these people do not get involved in class. The online environment strips away that inhibition.

  7. More Interaction with Students: Because of the structure of online classes, chat forums and online discussions are a major part of the online learning strategy. In a traditional classroom setting you may or may not interact with your fellow students. With online classes, it is a necessity, and there are many online students who claim that this is one of their favorite aspects of online learning.

  8. More Interaction with Instructors: One of the issues with online learning is the isolation of the student. Online instructors are well aware of this and take every opportunity to reach out to their students to bridge that gap. At a traditional college, you may never speak one on one with your professors.

  9. Free Tutoring: Online colleges often make tutoring available to their students at no extra cost. This is of great value since tutoring can cost anywhere from $20 to $100 per hour.

  10. You Can Learn in Your Pajamas! And last but not least – you can learn from the comfort of your own home. This means you can go to class in sweats, boxers, even your pajamas. It also means that if you are hungry, you can get up, fix a snack and eat it – without having to worry about how loud that potato chip bag is.  Free enrollment information is available at Master of Science Degree, Master of Arts Degrees or Master Degree Programs.

Scrapbooking Graduation Memories

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Graduation makes a great theme for scrapbooking. This kind of scrapbook could be started years before the graduation or just a few months ahead of the event. As an ongoing project, it could be something you use to record all the school years’ memories. You might involve your child in the creation of this book, or just make it your own special project. Your scrapbook could be created as a traditional scrapbook or you could make a digital scrapbook.

Your collection of memories will be something you and your child can enjoy for years to come. Recording the trials and tribulations, as well as the special moments along the way will help make this a treasured memory book.

There are some pre-designed scrapbook papers with a graduation theme. Use clip art or other pictures by printing them for use as embellishments. Be sure to use an appropriate type of glue (archival and acid free paper or adhesives protect the photos and other elements from deteriorating).

Addition of your child’s hobbies, clubs, scouting information, special awards, favorite sports, favorite foods or other personal details is a good start. Possible other additional documents to include are awards and report cards or copies of them. Photos, notes or any other memorabilia from friends and family would be nice to add. Those hopes and dreams you have never shared with your child could be included as personal, handwritten notes. Scanning items such as these would be ideal if you plan to make a digital scrapbook.

Other ideas: Add school photos from each year of middle or high school. School dances or prom mementos. Embellish the pages with graduation stickers to add more interest. Dedicate a page for each year, such as: freshman, sophomore, junior and senior. Die cuts can be used to add interest to your pages. You can find die cuts or paper shapes with pictures and themes that illustrate hobbies, sports, or music, and use them as scrapbook embellishments. These can be bought at art, craft and scrapbook supply stores.)

You can also leave room for candid photos of the graduation ceremony, parties, or events held before the graduation. Save space for graduation announcements or invitations to the event. Under the photos, add captions or other descriptions and notes.

Pick out a nice binder or scrapbook album to keep the graduation scrapbook pages in. Be sure the album you plan to use will have room for all of your school memorabilia including, awards, copies of report cards or school photos.

After graduation, when the diploma arrives, you might include a copy of it in the album. It’s worth remembering, so plan your graduation album and keep it up-to-date. This makes a great present, as well as a lasting memory book about a graduation from middle school, high school or college. And those memories are the kind you want to keep and share forever.

Intrepid School Run

A song for the White Van Man

Driving to school. Cruising gently along at 30mph on a busy school road with

children, pushchairs and dogs spilling onto the road and yet with all these hazards around,

you know – you just know that the White Van Man will rear his ugly head and try and

ram it up the arse of your car!

He’s waiting for us…

My baby is alseep in the back of the car and my daughter strapped in tight but still

dancing with Saint Vitus as she waves at her friends and hollers their name from the window.

I can see him in my rear-view mirror…Looming towards us..far too fast..

Nevermind that the brave and the daring and the just plain stupid ahead are being flashed by police cameras for exceeding the speed limit.

Red traffic light coming, I need to slow down.

Nevermind that I can see the lollipop lady preparing her kids for the intrepid

journey from South to North across the road.

He is still up the arse-end of my car!

I’m gritting my teeth and trying not to react to the danger my young family is being placed in…

I can see you smoking your fag, and shoving your face with a bacon bap and tomato

sauce oozing out onto your chin and falling to your belly.

How your van ever passed its MOT will always fail me.

Ode to Mr White Van Man

Mr White Van Man

Shave your face and brush your teeth

Wash your pits right underneath

File your nails and brush your hair

and then groom your derriere.

Mr White Van Man

Leave your cigarettes at home,

your bacon bap and mobile phone.

Take a breath and a moment,

Are you going to be a gent?

Mr White Van Man

Pull out your van so gentily

From my rearview, smile at me,

Not too close now, give me space

This school run is not a race.

Thanks to all burger suppliers, garages, van leasing suppliers and others who helped the White Van Man evolve into such a creature.

From a fed up mum!
