Make And Do At Halloween

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Halloween will soon be here and many  are wondering how and where to celebrate this spooky annual event.

When it comes to All Hallow’s Eve….there is no lack of variety in what is available. From trick or treating to hosting a scary movie marathon, finding something not to do would actually be more of a challenge! Here are some frightfully good ideas that involved arts and crafts, movies, yummy food and more – all of which will make for an interesting evening.

If you live in a friendly neighbourhood, you could consider trick or treating. This works especially well if you fore-warn your neighbours of your intentions by leaving a note on their doorstep a few days before Halloween. Certain neighbourhoods, appartment blocks and gated communities really make an effort to be prepared with treats and some even decorate their front gardens. My children still remember the guy who turned his whole front yard into a dark catacomb and who then sat quietly in the dark as we walked up the path before scaring us all half to death!

Halloween falls on a ’school-night’ this year, so young children  need an early night but will  still feel as though they celebrated if you set up a few special treats, some arts and crafts and perhaps a fun movie before bedtime.

Halloween fancy dress parties are great to both host and attend and if you are stuck for costume ideas, again – head for Google and do an image search!  If you have teenagers, they may scoff at the thought of having a Halloween party but may like the thought of a night of terror and suspense. Depending on their age, you could arrange to hire movies such as Hocus Pocus, Psycho or the Blair Witch Project. Just add friends, popcorn, soda and a pizza delivery for instant teenage heaven.

Scour the net elsewhere too for a variety of activities including paper plate pumpkins and pipe cleaner spiders. Older children may enjoy making slime with two cups of water, half a cup of cornstarch and a few drops of red or green food colouring.

Carve a pumpkin – Pumpkin carving is a great family activity and it takes perserverance more than it takes skill. Visit Pumpkin Carving Templates where you will find some great pumpkin carving stencils as well as instructions and videos on how to carve pumpkins.

I love Murder Mystery dinner parties and if you pick one with a Chinese, Indian or Italian theme you don’t even have to cook – you can just order a home delivery from your local Chinese or Indian take-away or from your favourite pizza place. Choose fun guest with a sense of humour and who will get into the spirit of the evening by dressing up and taking on the mannerisms and accent of the character you have chosen for them and you are in for a memorable evening.

To spend the evening playing games with family is also a great way to pass the time. Board games such as Cluedo or the types of jigsaw puzzles that involve solving riddles are just perfect. Prepare some themed nibbles and a few drinks  and you will have spent some true Halloween quality time together.

These are just a few ideas that will keep you occupied this eerie evening – happy howling!

Catwoman Costume – Sexiest Costume For Halloween

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

One of my favorite characters from the Batman comics and films is Catwoman. It’s a fantastic costume for Halloween because black cats have long been seen as familiars of witches and are associated with evil, the occult and bad luck in general. Catwoman just looks so sexy in her black cat suit and mask. Is she sexy in spite of the fact that she is a villain or because of it? If the thought of dressing up as Catwoman makes you want to purr, here are some tips.

Get the costume

If you want to be Catwoman then you have to dress like her. For this you can refer to the three Catwomen that are most memorable. The first is the amazing Eartha Kitt who played Catwoman in the 1960’s television series. Who can forget her trademark growl-like purr and tight black all in one cat suit, eye mask and cat ear head band.

Michelle Pfeiffer is the next that comes to mind and she’s my particular favorite. She played Catwoman in “Batman Returns” (1992). Here we see her transform from being a quiet and shy secretary into the sexy and evil Catwoman after her boss tries to kill her. Her outfit and mask was super sexy made of black latex  with distinctive molded rubber stitches. It was designed by Syren Couture, a leading latex high fashion house. It was constructed like a second skin for Michelle Pfeiffer whilst allowing her to kick and jump. Did you know that this catwoman outfit was auctioned in May 2009 and sold for $8,260, the highest amount for a single outfit?

Finally, even though the movie was trashed, I think that Halle Berry’s portrayal in the 2004 Catwoman looked purr-fect!! A lot more revealing than both Eartha Kitt’s and Michelle Pfeiffer’s costume, it certainly didn’t leave much to the imagination. Made of black PVC vinyl, the costume consisted of a cleavage revealing black bra with large straps that crossed over in the front and attached to a belt and low-rise black pants with what looks like cat scratches down the front and back. To finish off she wore a hooded cat-ear half mask and elbow-length gloves with attached claws.

Move like a cat

Having chosen your Catwoman style, you need to practice moving like a cat and taking on some of the cat characteristics. Cats are always described as slinky, sly and cunning. The main thing is to move gracefully. As far as the vocal aspects of a cat, you should practice purring and meowing.

To get your purr-fect costume for Halloween or for any fancy dress event be sure to take a look at the catwoman costume page on my website. If you want some ideas on other female superheroes, drop by my sexy superhero costumes site.

Baby Halloween Costume Designing

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Babies look so cute in costumes, which is why come Halloween, a lot of parents take the time to conjure up a baby Halloween costume for their tiny tots. For some parents, buying a baby Halloween costume may be more feasible than making one but for those who have the extra time, go ahead and make one. A baby Halloween costume can be fun to make or design and you can even make use of old things that you have in your house that suits your purpose.

Considerations For A Baby Halloween Costume

There are some things that you need to bear in mind when you are designing a baby Halloween costume. These are the comfort and also the safety of the child. No matter how cute you think the costume may be for your child, if there is an element of danger, it is better not to go ahead with it to avoid any accidents. The safety of the child must always come first with regards to the design of the costume. Most problems with a baby Halloween costume have something to do with how to attach things or attach the costume to your child. Ties or scarves around the neck of the baby Halloween costume need to be relatively loose without any risk of choking the baby. It is also better to tie with a light Velcro tape to enable easy untying when the need arises.

The comfort of the baby is also paramount because an uncomfortable baby will not sit still in his costume. He may even try to take off the costume or tear it off himself. Babies usually cry when they are uncomfortable so expect some tears if baby feels uncomfortable with his baby Halloween costume.

The Ghost

Depending on your skill with the sewing machine or hands, you can create a baby Halloween costume that is memorable. The easiest costume for baby that can be made by those with not much skill with the sewing machine can be a ghost. A ghost baby Halloween costume can be made out of a cotton sheet or a bed sheet or cover that you are not using anymore. To prevent possible suffocation, instead of cutting out eye slits for your baby, it is best to cut out a hole where baby can stick his head out.

The Farmer

A farmer baby Halloween costume can be made by using a denim overall with a red checkered (or any color) shirt. A straw hat with some flowers (if your baby is a girl) or a handkerchief tied around the top completes the outfit.

Infant Halloween Costume Ideas

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Halloween is a great time to dress up and get going with the candy. Babies and infants are often dressed by their parents in adorable costumes and paraded up and down the neighborhood. An infant Halloween costume needs to be comfortable and safe for the infant. The comfort and safety of the infant is a priority because parents will not buy unsafe costume that may put their child in danger of choking, suffocating or any other danger.

Choosing An Infant Halloween Costume

Ideally, an infant Halloween costume must have no strings or ties that the child might be choked with or eat up and choke on. Remember that older infants can hold on to something and just put it in their mouths without any thought for the consequences. An infant Halloween costume needs to be comfortable in such a way that the infant is not restricted or else you will have a bawling child in your hands while trick or treating. The infant Halloween costume that you pick for your infant needs to be suited for the weather during the season. In most states of the United States of America, November is a cool or chilly month. Dress your child in an infant Halloween costume that can keep him or her warm and less susceptible to the autumn chill.

Costumes For Halloween Suited For Infants

Infants might also appreciate infant Halloween costumes that are less restrictive like those that rely most on accessories than clothing itself to express what they represent. Angel costumes with soft pliable wings that can bend when the infant lays on them are great as well as the devil costume that need only a soft fabric headband with fabric horns. For the angel costumes, you can dress your child in an all white ensemble while the devil costume will need a black or a red ensemble. The wings for the angle infant Halloween costume are essential, the same with the red fabric horns.

A flower costume can be brought to life with a green shirt and a large flower headband made of fabric. While a fairy costume needs only a shimmery short skirt with some soft fabric wings. Other ideas for great infant Halloween costumes include action heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman. If interested in superheroes as the infant Halloween costume for your child, you might like to choose those who have no masks because these can be cumbersome for your infant.

The comfort and safety of your child is the priority in choosing an infant Halloween costume. This is a necessity to a successful Halloween celebration or for a longer period of trick or treating.
